Lip filler and lip flips: understanding your options

Lip filler adds volume and can change the shape of the lips. A lip flip changes how the upper lip moves, which may make more of it visible. What you notice with your face relaxed may be different from what you notice when you smile. That distinction helps guide the choice.

You might like the fullness of your lips but notice that the upper lip turns inward when you smile. Or you might want a clearer border without much extra volume. Describe that detail at your consultation.

What lip filler can do

Hyaluronic acid filler is a gel placed in the lips or their border. The amount and placement depend on the change being considered. Adding definition along an edge is a different plan from increasing fullness throughout the lip.

Filler can cause swelling and bruising. The appearance immediately after injection includes that swelling and should not be treated as the settled result. If you have an event coming up, mention the date before arranging treatment and allow for recovery to vary.

There are also less common, serious risks, including interruption of blood supply to tissue. Unusual pain, pale or dusky skin and any change in vision after filler need immediate medical attention. Ask how to obtain help if a concern develops after you leave the clinic.

What to understand about a lip flip

A lip flip uses a prescription treatment to change activity in the muscle around the upper lip. It does not place filler in the lip. Because it changes movement, suitability includes considering everyday functions such as drinking and speaking.

It cannot provide the same change in volume or border definition as filler. A smaller-looking procedure still needs a medical assessment and a discussion of its risks. Ask what change is realistic for your particular lip movement, how long that change may last and what happens if you dislike the effect.

Can treatment be undone?

Hyaluronic acid filler can sometimes be reduced or dissolved with an injectable enzyme. That is another medical procedure with its own risks and assessment. It should not be thought of as an instant, guaranteed return to your previous appearance.

The effects of a lip flip cannot be immediately dissolved in the same way. Discuss that limit before treatment, especially if the ability to reverse a change matters to you.
